Industry-Leading Chemical Catalyst Manufacturers

Identifying the best catalyst for a chemical process is a daunting task. Applied Catalysts has a mission of helping those without a historical database of catalysts and performance data. A combination of catalysis experience and investment in testing and characterization tools and leveraged resources have been organized to help customers transition from lab-scale to commercial-scale chemical processes.

Our catalyst development services build on a foundation of catalyst development over the 30-year history of Applied Catalysts, for both monolith-based and particulate catalysts, and PGM and base metal catalysts. We have developed catalysts for hydrogenation and other reductive processes, selected proprietary chemistries of customers, and emission control catalysts.

Our Process

Applied Catalysts offers assistance in converting your batch chemistry to a continuous fixed bed process at all stages of development. This assistance includes providing catalysts, process development, and scale-up to commercial production. These may be particulate or monolith-based catalysts. In some cases, Applied Catalysts would combine the catalyst development effort with catalyst testing.

For hydrogenation catalysts, lab scale and pilot tube scale testing are available. For other chemistry, testing can be arranged on a custom basis, where we tailor our current equipment to your process. Combining our testing services with our catalyst development and engineering services accelerates project success and maximizes value creation for the customer.

How Chemical Catalysts Help You:

For those practicing batch reactors, converting to a continuous process can lower operating costs significantly, and increase productivity. In addition, the path to commercialization will be shortened, increasing the NPV realized from the implementation of new technology.

Pain Points We Solve with Chemical Catalysts:

It is not common to have an organization that spans the catalyst development process from lab scale to pilot scale to commercial production. Building such a capability delays time to market and may not be cost-effective compared to working with a chemical catalyst company like ours where the resources have been developed over years of similar projects. Implementing catalyst development technology rapidly enables rapid commercialization and maximizes the NPV created by implementing the developed catalysts.

Catalyst Processes

Hydrogenation

The hydrogenation process involves the addition of hydrogen to organic substrates. The functional groups being converted in the organic substrates can be olefinic (unsaturated) to aliphatic groups, aromatic compounds to aliphatic compounds, nitro groups to amines, nitrile groups to amines, acids to aldehydes, and aldehydes and ketones to alcohols and ethers. Hydrogenation can also be used to remove sulfur, nitrogen, and chlorine content in molecules.

Reductive Alkylation

As a provider of catalytic technology, Applied Catalysts provides metal catalysts used in the reductive alkylation process which involves the addition of alkyl groups to amines, and amines to carbonyl containing compounds.

Oxidation to Chemicals

Activated carbon monolith catalysts can also be used to oxidize organic substrates to other chemicals. There are many oxidation reactions of interest, including transformations of bio-mass to chemicals.

Others

Catalysis forms the backbone of several industrial processes. This is where Applied Catalysts assists as a provider of catalytic technology. Other catalyst processes in industrial processes include producing ammonia and synthesizing drugs for the pharmaceutical industry.

Industries Served

Biorenewables

Applied Catalysts serves bio-renewable industries to develop, scale up and help commercialize bio-based products and processes. ACMC catalytic reactors can be used for bio-mass transformations, everal fine chemical products, including pharmaceuticals.

Specialty Chemicals

Applied Catalysts serves several specialty chemical industries that deal with specialty chemicals, including adhesives and cosmetic additives. The catalytic reactors convert a reactant of a single or more chemical reactions into a product or multiple products.

Fine Chemical Catalysts

Applied Catalysts is well-conversant with the market’s needs and works effortlessly to meet them as a leader in catalytic technology for fine chemical products. These fine chemicals include active pharmaceutical ingredients and biocides.

Oleochemicals

As a catalytic technology provider for oleochemical hydrogenation, Applied Catalysts ACMC catalysts have been shown to convert unsaturated sucrose esters to saturated sucrose esters in a continuous process with high activity, selectivity and lifetime.

Polymers

Applied Catalysts is looking to provide polymer hydrogenation catalysts, systems and services to rubber, elastomer, and other hydrogenated polymers. Applications include tires, synthetic fibers, fiberglass, and silicone heart valves.

Pharmaceuticals

The manufacture of pharmaceuticals often contains one or more catalytic hydrogenation steps. Monolith catalysts convert the functional group of a molecule selectively into a new one to produce the starting material for the next synthetic step. Applied Catalysts can provide ACMC monolith-based catalysts for continuous flow process chemistry, enhancing the sustainability and low cost of manufacturing pharmaceutical products.

Continuous tubular reactors offer better scalability enabling faster speed to market, to better maximize NPV.

Continuous processes mitigate scale-up risk from laboratory to full-scale operations by increasing uniformity and reducing localized concentration gradients.
