Custom & Industry Catalysts

Identifying the best catalys for a chemical process is a daunting task. Applied Catalysts has a mission of helping those without a historical database of catalysts and performance data. Whether designing the catalyst to meet the process requirements or selecting from proven and historical catalysts, Applied Catalysts can deliver the catalyst you need. A combination of catalysis experience and investments in internal resources and external relationships have been organized to deliver these results.

Delivering Custom and Industry Catalysts builds on a foundation of catalyst development over the 30-year history of Applied Catalysts, for both monolith-based and particulate catalysts, and PGM and base-metal catalysts. We have developed catalysts for hydrogenation and other
reductive processes, and selected proprietary chemistries of customers.

Our Custom & Industry Catalyst Process

Applied Catalysts apply internally-developed, externally-developed and, when needed, newly-developed catalysts for customer processes. Lab-scale reactors are available to run customer chemistry or related chemistry. This assistance includes providing catalysts, process development, and scale-up to commercial production. The goal is to provide the best catalyst and process solutions to our customers. We leverage outside resources as needed, to complement the customer team.

How Custom & Industry Catalysts Help You

Having access to a broad range of catalysts enables more rapid project success. It can be quickly determined if catalyst development is needed and action taken. This shortens the path to commercialization, increasing the NPV realized from implementing the new project technology.

It is not common to have an organization that spans the catalyst development process from lab scale to pilot scale to commercial production. Building such a capability delays time to market and may not be cost-effective compared to working with a chemical catalyst company like ours, where the
resources have been developed over years of similar projects.

Chemical Catalysts

In addition to the ACMC monolith-based catalysts, Applied Catalysts can provide particulate catalysts to solve customer catalytic needs. Applied Catalysts will provide Industry Standard catalysts when available from a number of participating Catalyst Vendors in addition to proprietary catalysts manufactured by Applied Catalysts.

Catalyst Processes

The hydrogenation process involves the addition of hydrogen to organic substrates. The functional groups being converted in the organic substrates can be olefinic (unsaturated) to aliphatic groups, aromatic compounds to aliphatic compounds, nitro groups to amines, nitrile groups to amines, acids to aldehydes, and aldehydes and ketones to alcohols and ethers. Hydrogenation can also be used to remove sulfur, nitrogen and chlorine content in molecules.

Reductive Alkylation

As a provider of catalytic technology, Applied Catalysts provides metal catalysts used in the reductive alkylation process which involves the addition of alkyl groups to amines, and amines to carbonyl-containing compounds.

Oxidation to Chemicals

Activated carbon monolith catalysts can also be used to oxidize organic substrates to other chemicals. There are many oxidation reactions of interest, including transformations of bio-mass to chemicals.

Catalysis forms the backbone of several industrial processes. This is where Applied Catalysts assists as a provider of catalytic technology. Other catalyst processes in industrial processes include producing ammonia and synthesizing drugs for the pharmaceutical industry.

Industries Served

Applied Catalysts serves bio-renewable industries to develop, scale up and help commercialize bio-based products and processes. ACMC catalytic reactors can be used for bio-mass transformations, several fine chemical products, including pharmaceuticals.

Specialty Chemicals

Applied Catalysts serves several specialty chemical industries that deal with specialty chemicals, including adhesives and cosmetic additives. The catalytic reactors convert a reactant of a single or more chemical reaction into a product or multiple products.

Fine Chemical Catalysts

Applied Catalysts is well-conversant with the market’s needs and works effortlessly to meet them as a leader in catalytic technology for fine chemical products. These fine chemicals include active pharmaceutical ingredients and biocides.

As a catalytic technology provider for oleochemical hydrogenation, Applied Catalysts ACMC catalysts have been shown to convert unsaturated sucrose esters to saturated sucrose esters in a continuous process with high activity, selectivity and lifetime.

Applied Catalysts is looking to provide polymer hydrogenation catalysts, systems and services to rubber, elastomer, and other hydrogenated polymers. Applications include tires, synthetic fibers, fiberglass, and silicone heart valves.

The manufacture of pharmaceuticals often contains one or more catalytic hydrogenation steps. Monolith catalysts convert the functional group of a molecule selectively into a new one to produce the starting material for the next synthetic step. Applied Catalysts can provide ACMC monolith-based catalysts for continuous flow process chemistry, enhancing the sustainability and low cost of manufacturing pharmaceutical products.

Increase Project Success with Custom & Industry Catalysts

Having the right catalyst is one of the key pieces to project success and commercialization. Leveraging internally-developed custom and industry catalysts, along with rapid catalyst testing, lowers technical risk and improves NPV capture. Here is what we bring to the table:

  • we have developed catalysts for many continuous hydrogenation and reduction chemical applications
  • have existing assets in place for tons/day quantities of catalyst manufacturing
  • we respond quickly to customer catalyst development needs

We are committed to applying world-class catalyst technology for the chemistry of interest using internal and industry standard catalysts – assuring the best available catalysts for each application, whether we produce the catalysts or sourced from world-class vendors.
